My research focuses mainly on the characterization of fungal communities associated with the phyllosphere of trees using high-throughput sequencing. Recent research has shown that these communities are species rich and add substantially to the taxonomic hyper-diversity of the kingdom Fungi. Still, relatively little is known about their basic biology or their influence on the host tree.

Questions we are trying to answer are related to host specificity and biogeographic patterns of these fungal communities. One of the long-term goals is to understand the contribution of fungal communities to tree health. To achieve this we are in the process of establishing Eucalyptus as a model system for tree microbiome research.
