My PhD study is focused on using global transcriptome sequencing to identify and exploit the molecular mechanisms at play in the Cercospora zeina – maize pathosystem. My research interest specifically lies in the defensive molecules that plants produce upon pathogen attack, such as secondary metabolites, and how they contribute to disease resistance. Phytoalexins are a group of secondary metabolites, synthesised de novo after pathogen attack with antimicrobial properties. My research includes targeted phytoalexin profiling in a resistant and a susceptible maize line in order to characterize the chemical changes that occur in maize leaves in response to C. zeina infection. The work forms part of a project entitled ‘Genomics of Quantitative Disease Resistance in African Maize Varieties’ a collaborative effort between the University of Pretoria, the Centre for Proteomic and Genomic Research (CPGR), the University of KwaZulu-Natal, and PANNAR SEED (Pty) Ltd. I am based in Cape Town and while a PhD student by night, by day I am a Senior Support and Applications Scientist for Kapa Biosystems, which has recently been acquired by Roche Sequencing.
