On Thursday, 14 August, Prof. Zander Myburg and Mrs Marja O’Neill from the Forest Molecular Genetics (FMG) programme presented some of their research on Marker-Assisted Breeding (MAB) during a webinar on the Golden Helix data analysis platform.  The FMG group is the first in FABI to venture into this format for workshops. The webinar focus was on genome wide association studies using the Golden Helix SNP and Variation Suite 8 platform.  Prof. Myburg and Mrs O’Neill showed how Golden Helix has enabled very efficient data analyses for MAB applications.  This was followed by a highly informative tutorial on GWAS in Arabidopsis by Ms Ashley Hintz, Field Application Scientist at Golden Helix Inc. (presentation can be viewed here).  People from several different departments at UP, as well as representatives from Sappi and the University of Witwatersrand, logged on and participated in the webinar. This proved to be a very efficient means of presenting workshops, and has certainly set the trend for more to come in FABI.
