Dr Nicky Creux and the FABI social media team hosted a hybrid Publishing Workshop on 8 May. This event had both online and in-person participants from many departments across the Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences and Innovation Africa @UP at the University of Pretoria. In the event Dr Creux presented the eLife paper she co-authored with the Harmer Lab at UC Davis. This publication made Dr Creux eligible for the Ben Barr's Spotlight Award from eLife which she was awarded at the end of 2023. As part of the award we hosted a Publishing Workshop to showcase eLife's new publishing model, which embraces preprints and strives for a more transparent process. Prof. Meredith Schuman (University of Zurich), Senior Editor of eLife, joined online for a Q&A session about the new publishing model. This was followed by FABI's own Information Specialist, Sam Madau, who brought a team from the University of Pretoria Library Services to discuss the writing and publishing resources available at the University. This well attended event provided much food for thought on open access and preprint publishing.
