Interns attend a phytosanitation course 2024-10-21
FABI's Phytosanitation and Biosecurity interns attended a weeklong Phytosanitation course facilitated by Marianna Theyse from PhytoSolutions Consultancy. The course laid a strong foundation on the understanding of Phytosanitary regulations, providing an in-depth understanding of national and international regulations (e.g from the International Plant Protection Convention – IPPC) which are related to plant health and pest control. This includes knowledge of quarantine systems, inspection procedures, and the role of government agencies in controlling plant diseases and pests. The course equipped interns with information on the identification and management of pests and diseases (quarantine and regulated pests). This includes learning about pest risk analysis, surveillance, detection techniques, and best practices for preventing the spread of pests and diseases. Through this course the interns have a better understanding of how the phytosanitary measures facilitate safe trade by minimizing the risk of introducing pests through the movement of agricultural commodities, while complying with World Trade Organization (WTO) guidelines.
