Women and Girls in Forestry Science celebrated by a global IUFRO Webinar series 2025-02-17
A global IUFRO webinar event took place on the 11 and 12 February to celebrate the 2025 International Day of Women and Girls in Science. The webinar aimed to recognize the contribution women make to forest research. The event was divided into four sessions during which 20 women in science presented their work related to forests. The topics included forest health, social aspects of forests, silviculture, conservation, resilience to climate change, and many more.
Dr Joséphine Quefellec, the deputy coordinator for the Entomology research group within IUFRO Division 7: Forest Health and former FABIan, led the globally presented organizing committee which included Dr Ariska van der Nest and Ginna Granados as part of the team. Dr Ariska van der Nest and Ginna Granados each moderated a session, and included in the 20 women that presented their work were Dr Trudy Paap, who gave a talk on developing biosecurity best practice guidelines for South Africa’s botanical gardens, and Dr Kira Lynn who spoke about a section of her recently completed PhD thesis: the detection, dispersal and global distribution of Ceratocystis species on Eucalyptus.
