FABI recently welcomed a group of Grade 11 learners from Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool (Affies) as part of an ongoing outreach initiative designed to showcase opportunities in scientific research. The visiting students, all enrolled in Biology as a school subject, were given a hands-on introduction to laboratory techniques and research at FABI.

During their visit, a team of postgraduate students from FABI and the Department of Biochemistry, Genetics and Microbiology guided the students through various experiments. Nicole van Vuuren presented captivating microscopic images of well-known fungi, including Aspergillus and Rhizopus, while the learners carried out a PCR reaction to screen for antibiotic resistance in bacteria and used gel electrophoresis to analyse their results. The day offered a practical glimpse into the world of scientific inquiry and the advanced methodologies used in research.

The outreach initiative, coordinated in collaboration with FABI and the Department of Biochemistry, Genetics and Microbiology—and overseen by Dr Markus Wilken—aims to create awareness about ongoing research efforts. Plans are already in place to welcome more school groups in the future, as FABI continues to inspire young minds to pursue careers in science.
