Crop Protection students visit the FABI Biocontrol Facility 2025-03-26
On 27 February, as part of their Crop Protection course with Professors Almuth Hammerbacher and Brett Hurley, second year undergraduate students visited the FABI Biocontrol and Insect Rearing Facility. During this visit Zandile Mngadi explained the function of the Facility and then the students were exposed to the work conducted at the Facility, which included:
- Rearing insects on artificial diet and its importance in the management strategy of these insects (Matt Jackson)
- Rearing of the two-spotted stink bug (Bathycoelia distincta), a pest of Macadamia orchards (Dr Rosali Moffat)
- An introduction to nematodes and how they are used to control pests (Sophie Nyoni)
- Classical biological control of Gonipterus n. 2 (Christoff Joubert)
- Methods used to monitor pests in the field (Fanelesibonge Hlabisa)
The students were enthusiastic participants in the visit, showing their interest in the work at the Facility.
