A brief forest pathology tour of south Estonia 2019-08-06
As part of his participation in the 2019 International Forestry Students’ Symposium (IFSS), Prof. Mike Wingfield had the opportunity to visit forest pathology colleagues linked to the Estonian University of Life Sciences in Tartu. These colleagues included Prof. Rein Drenkhan who has collaborated with FABI researchers, especially Dr Irene Barnes and Dr Gerda Fourie, on various European Union Cost Action projects. During his visit to Tartu and the forests in this area Mike was accompanied by Alexander Buck (Executive Director of IUFRO) and André Purret also of the IUFRO Headquarters Office in Vienna. Various research projects were inspected including those on Ash Die-Back, Brown Spot Needle Blight caused by Lecanosticta acicola now expanding to Pinus sylvestris and the topic of a recent review led by FABI student Ariska van der Nest as well as Root Rot caused by Heterobasidion annosum. Opportunities to establish research collaborations with Estonian colleagues were also explored.
