I am a student at the University of Pretoria in the Department of Plant and Soil sciences. I am currently busy with my MSc degree in Biotechnology and doing a genomics-based project under the supervision of Professor Dave Berger, Professor Simo Maduna, Professor Namrita Lall and Dr Marco De Canha. We are investigating genomic information of the endemic, medicinal plant genus, Greyia. For this project, we are developing a bioinformatics pipeline to look at the diversity of non-model plants such as Greyia using 3RAD. This is a modification of Restriction Site-Associated DNA sequencing and provides a reduced, but sufficient representation of the genomes of the plants of interest. In addition, we plan to develop a SNP-based genotyping assay using the 3RAD data to be applied across Greyia populations to obtain useful information regarding species distribution and genetic diversity.
