I completed my undergraduate degree in BScAgric Plant Pathology in 2024 and I am continuing with my Master’s degree in Plant Pathology under the supervision of Prof Jacquie van der Waals. My project will focus on developing a rapid, accurate, and reliable bioassay to screen fruit and leaves of citrus cultivars in South Africa for their susceptibility to Alternaria Brown Spot. Alternaria Brown Spot is caused by the fungus Alternaria alternata and occurs in all citrus-producing regions in South Africa. Genetic resistance is the most long-term, sustainable solution for the control of Alternaria Brown Spot and therefore the development of a reliable bioassay is needed to help breeders and farmers control the disease.
