Systematics and Evolution of Rhizobia

SER_Thumbnail

The Systematics and Evolution of Rhizobia (SER) research group investigates the diversity, evolution and ecology of nitrogen-fixing bacteria (rhizobia) associated with native and non-native legumes in South Africa. Using microbiological, genetic and genomic approaches, we characterise these bacteria, reconstruct their evolutionary histories and investigate the processes driving their diversification. Our research explores how rhizobial diversity and distribution are influenced by legume hosts, geography and environmental factors. We also investigate the ecological roles of rhizobia in biological nitrogen fixation, plant invasions and woody plant encroachment. Ultimately, our research aims to advance our understanding of rhizobial biodiversity and evolution while exploring their potential applications in sustainable agriculture and ecosystem management.
