The University of Pretoria recently welcomed an enthusiastic group of Grade 11 and 12 learners to delve into the diverse disciplines within the Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences (NAS). The Open Day provided a unique opportunity for these budding scientists to gain insights into the fascinating world of agricultural and natural sciences.

Throughout the day, attendees had the chance to engage with faculty members, researchers, and industry experts, gaining valuable knowledge about the various disciplines within NAS. From agronomy to environmental science, students explored a wide array of fields, each offering unique opportunities for learning and discovery.

Campus tours offered a behind-the-scenes look at the state-of-the-art facilities and laboratories where ground-breaking research is conducted. These tours provided students with a first-hand glimpse into the exciting possibilities that await them in the field of natural and agricultural sciences.

One of the highlights of the event was the exhibition presented by the Forestry and Agricultural Biotechnology Institute (FABI). FABI, represented by Prof. Fanus Venter, Vinolia Danki, Samantha Bush, Tjitjila Makhura, and Boitshoko Rammuki, showcased ground-breaking research in biocontrol methods and offered valuable insights into plant pathology through the Tree Protection Co-operative Programme (TPCP) and Grain Research Programme (GRP) Diagnostic Clinic. Students were fascinated by the hands-on displays of pests and their associated biocontrol agents, which provided a glimpse into the innovative solutions being developed to address the challenges of pests and diseases in agriculture and forestry. Several other FABIans were also assisting at exhibitions by the Department of Biochemistry, Genetics and Microbiology as well as the Department of Plant and Soil Sciences.

The Open Day was a resounding success, leaving participants inspired and eager to pursue further studies in science-related fields.
