UP Vice Chancellor and Principal meets FABI 2025-01-28
The recently appointed Vice Chancellor and Principal of the University of Pretoria (UP), Prof. Francis Petersen attended the Institute’s regular Monday Morning Meeting on 27 January.
Addressing a packed FABI auditorium, Prof. Petersen spoke passionately about his vision to ensure that the University of Pretoria is an inclusive, people-centred institution with no compromises regarding teaching and research excellence. He noted that his wish is for all staff to be able to function “at the top of their game” but added that the university must enable them to do so. He explained that a human-centred approach always ensures the best results. He also stressed the importance of the application of digital technology and Artificial Intelligence and discussed how he planned to make this an integral part of the UP DNA. Prof. Petersen also said that the entire University community needed to work together to enhance the visibility of the institution globally. He singled out FABI, describing the Institute as an Institute that is nationally and internationally recognised for research excellence. He complimented the Institute and its Director, Prof. Bernard Slippers for outstanding leadership and pointed out that the University, as a whole, could learn from its successes. In closing, he wished the staff and students of FABI well for the year ahead.
