My Files
I study the molecular ecology and evolution of fungal communities, fungal pathogens and insect pests of plants, especially trees, as well as their symbioses and their natural enemies. I am particularly interested in the anthropogenic impacts on the outcomes of the interactions between these organisms. These interests are explored within a context of both invasive plant pathogens and pests, and native pests or pathogens expanding their host ranges to attack trees of forestry and agricultural importance. My research combines information from systematics, biogeography, phylogenetics, population genetics, (meta-) barcoding, (-)genomics, (-)transcriptomics and chemical ecology.
I work on a variety of systems, but have focused extensively on the Botryosphaeriaceae as models of latent fungal pathogens and endophytes of trees. This work extends to a focus on fungal communities in above-ground parts of trees. From and entomological perspective, I have done extensive work on the Sirex woodwasp and its various symbionts and management. This work extends to the molecular and chemical ecology, as well as the biological control, of various other pests in forestry and agriculture, including in Macadamia and Maize.
My publications can be accessed via the various Research Profiles links on the left, or the reference lists below.

Other Interests
Apart from my direct research interest, I am also passionate about science development and the role of science in broader society. In this regard I have been involved in the global Young Academy movement as a founding member of the Global Young Academy (GYA) in 2010 and the South African Young Academy of Science (SAYAS) in 2011. I have served in the leadership of both these organizations and is a past co-chair of the GYA.
I lead a range of science leadership development programs, including the Africa Science Leadership Programme, Tuks Young Research Leadership Programme and the Early Career Research Leadership Programme.
I lead the development and am the founding director of Future Africa, an interfaculty and pan-African Institute focused on transdisciplinary research leadership for innovation in Africa.
Below in the Editorial & Commentaries and News & Views sections you will find pieces I have written about science, science and scientist development, science leadership and research universities.
