Three FABIans, Dr Neriman Yilmaz, Dr Felix Fru and Claudette Dewing attended the two-day MycoSafe-South workshop hosted by the University of Johannesburg (UJ) in collaboration with Ghent University (GU) in Belgium, from 13-14 February. MycoSafe-South is the “European-African partnership for safe and efficient use of mycotoxin-mitigation strategies in sub-Saharan Africa”, and intends to harness the expertise and infrastructure available in Europe by strengthening the capacity of the Southern partners to tackle the mycotoxin problem and the associated food safety issues. The first day of the workshop took place at the Doornfontein campus of UJ. Professor Sarah de Saeger (UG) introduced the mycotoxin research platform of MyTox-South, followed by Prof. Siska Croubels (UG) who presented on the LEAP-Agri project MycoSafe-South which is an European-African partnership for safe and efficient use of mycotoxin-mitigation strategies in sub-Saharan Africa. PhD candidates from UJ and UG presented their research on mycotoxin monitoring in dairy cattle, the efficacy of mycotoxin detoxifiers to reduce the toxicity of mycotoxins in dairy cattle and humans, decreasing aflatoxins contamination in poultry food products and lastly, mycotoxin mitigation. Professor Patrick Njobeh (UJ) presented on how to publish your research, followed by Dr Siegrid de Baere (UG) who presented on the analysis of mycotoxins in food, feed and biological matrices. The second day of the workshop took place at the Mycotoxin Laboratory at the National Metrology Institute of South Africa (NMISA) in Pretoria, where all participants received practical mycotoxin training. This training demonstrated how to prepare mycotoxin standards and samples for analysis, the validation of mycotoxin analysis methods and the calculation and interpretation of results.
